Whether I’m shopping for groceries, planning a day out with friends or making a luxury purchase it’s always my goal to never pay full price. Chloe’s Deal Club was formed because of my love for deal-stacking and finding bargains. Now I’m able to spill my secrets for seeking out the very best savings with you too.
Grocery shopping is something that we all have to do regularly, so it’s a great area of your budget to try to save money because it really does add up over the month! I shop in a variety of different supermarkets and have been compiling my favourite ways to save money on groceries at each of them. Today we’re going to focus on how to save money at Asda and I know you’ll find these tips useful, so let’s get started.
Before I share the very best tips and tricks I want to chat briefly about loyalty points and apps. I’m not a big fan of these schemes, as I would just love it if everyone was able to head in store and get the best price without any need to stand in-store and scan a QR code, loyalty card or open up a loyalty app.
But it’s the way things are now though, and so I’ve signed up to every loyalty app and scheme I can find so I can save as much money as possible. I recommend that you do the same too! There are quite a few these days, with all different types of companies joining the hype, but if you use them correctly, the savings can be unreal!
I love to use loyalty schemes alongside other offers, such as Recycle At Boots, where you can really maximise the deals that you stack and get lots of loyalty points or money off.
How to save money at Asda
Sign up for Asda Rewards
The Asda Rewards scheme is a free loyalty program that is designed to help you earn money back when shopping with Asda in-store or online. This is probably the easiest way to save money at ASDA.
You shop with Asda, either in-store or online, and buy eligible products referred to as “Star Products”. Then you’ll earn money back into your Asda Cashpot. It’s that easy!
The “Star Products” change regularly and you’ll often find seasonal items, such as Halloween sweets, Christmas chocolates and stocking fillers all featuring.
In addition to earning money by purchasing “Star Products” there are also “Milestone Missions” within the Asda Rewards app which can help you earn some money back into your Cashpot too.
“Milestone Missions” will typically require you to spend a set amount of money either overall when shopping with Asda or in a specific category. This could be as simple as spending £50 shopping with Asda, in-store or online, or completing smaller missions such as spending £15 on ready meals and being rewarded with £1 into your Asda Rewards Cashpot.
You can receive money-off coupons within the Asda Rewards app too that can be redeemed against the price of your shopping.
You can find these coupons within the Wallet section of the Asda Rewards app and then either scan the coupons at the checkout in-store or select them from the checkout area when you checkout while shopping online.
Once you have earned a minimum of £1 of cashback, known as Asda Pounds in the Asda Rewards app, you can apply these earned rewards against your Asda grocery shopping, either in-store or online. You simply convert your Asda Cashpot earnings into vouchers and then these can be applied against the price of your grocery shopping. If you’re not too sure how to do this, just ask a member of the team at the till and they’ll help you.
Look out for “More Missions” in the Asda Rewards app too as on occasion you can earn additional cashback rewards for things like purchasing homeware, mobile phones or even signing up for financial services from Asda.
At selected times of the year you may find seasonal Cashpot boosting Missions. One recent example was for the back-to-school clothing category. You could receive 10% cashback in your Asda Cashpot for any school clothing or shoes purchased. Another Mission was £2 of cashback when spending £10 on back-to-school essentials such as stationery, lunch boxes and drinks bottles.
Asda Rewards is there to reward you for purchasing groceries and other goods with Asda, both in-store and online, by encouraging you to shop more frequently for specific products or items from set categories. You’re providing access to your own purchasing data and then being rewarded for the purchases that you make as a result.
Save your Asda Rewards cashback for Christmas
You can opt to save the earnings from your Cashpot towards Christmas, in a special Christmas Saver pot. You can add to this Cashpot throughout the year and then from November 8th to December 31st you can convert your Christmas Saver balance to vouchers to spend with both Asda and George.
It’s never too early to think about Christmas savings. I actually like to start saving a little bit of money every month from the start of the year.
From time to time the Asda Rewards app will also have limited edition Cashpots which come with bonuses. You can earn boosted rewards for your Cashpot by adding earned rewards to these pots and spending on a specific category or during a time-limited window.
Check out the Christmas Savings card
Asda have a Christmas Savings Card that allows you to save throughout the year for Christmas and receive a cash bonus in the process. You can either set automatic top-ups throughout the year or you can save what you can afford to when you can afford to.
Save throughout the year, little and often, or in one lump sum, and on Bonus Day, usually around 11th November, you’ll receive a cashback bonus depending on the value of your Christmas Saver card. If you have £280 on your card you can receive a £15 bonus. This is the same as receiving more than 5% as a bonus – not bad!
Check in-store for reductions
While in-store you’ll find different sections throughout the store with reduced items. Typically these are sections in the fresh aisles, one for meat and fish, one for fruit and vegetables and other fresh goods. You’ll then find a section in the bakery and another one for dried goods and toiletries together.
These reduced products have a yellow sticker on them and reductions are carried out early in the day. A second round of reductions is carried out in the late afternoon or early evening, and goods are often moved to one section at this time. If there is an excess amount of bakery goods you may find them from around 8pm at the front of the store reduced down to just 10p.
Initial reductions tend to be a discount of 25% to 33%. Later in the day reductions can be as high as 90%. On Sundays you’ll find final markdowns in store around 2-3pm.
Asda is one of the few supermarkets that seems to have a fairly well advertised reduced section, with lots of signage.
Shop from the Just Essentials range
Asda have a range of value products, known as the Just Essentials range. You can spot these in store by their bright yellow packaging.
In this range you’ll find meat and fish, fruit and vegetables, ready meals, cleaning products, and more.
If you’re shopping on a tight budget you won’t be able to make a full shop from just these items but they’ll help with the cost of your weekly shop considerably.
Use Scan & Go in-store
Asda have a range of stores with access to scanner handsets in-store. Visit the Scan & Go section near the front of the supermarket and then you enter your mobile phone number which unlocks a handheld handset.
The beauty of using a handheld scanner is that you can pack your shopping as you head around the store, keep a track on the money you’ve spent and you’ll find that there are dedicated tills to checkout in-store too. These are often quiet, with no queue, even during peak times.
Another great feature of these handsets is that they have a Price Check feature. This allows you to scan any item and check the price. Perfect if you have a store with a toy department, clothing department or home goods as these are often reduced without shelf edge labels being updated.
Admittedly, I always forget to use the scanners so I need to get better as listening to my own advice and make a point of using them!
Use grocery cashback apps
There are an array of different cash backs apps that let you pick up discounted or even free products from UK supermarkets. The most common ones to use are CheckoutSmart, Green Jinn and Shopmium – I find myself using Shopmium the most.
Each weeks these apps feature a selection of goods, mostly branded, that you can buy in UK supermarkets, both in-store or online, and then apply to be reimbursed for full or partial spends.
Typically I find it’s branded items on these apps, because at the end of the day it’s marketing! But you’ll find deals in a variety of categories including meat and fish, fruit and vegetables, fizzy drinks, ready meals, toiletries, cleaning products and more.
How they work is you browse the app, find an item you want to try or already love, check the packet size, purchase the item, upload a photograph of your receipt and then sit back and wait for the cashback to be processed. I’ll have a blog post up on Shopmium soon which will go into more detail.
Purchase a delivery pass if you shop online
If online shopping is your preferred way to grocery shop then you could save money at ASDA when you buy an Asda Delivery Pass.
Asda Delivery Passes can be purchased on a monthly or one-off basis. If you buy a monthly pass you can choose from a mid-week pass, for use on deliveries Tuesday – Thursday or an anytime pass which can be used any day of the week.
If you pay for a one-off pass you’ll be buying a 12-month membership. The price of this is equal to 10 monthly payments, meaning you receive 2 months free each year. This is a subscription service so set a reminder to check if you want it to renew a week or two before.
You can book next day delivery and free next day collection also using your pass, subject to a minimum order value of £40 per order, after any multi-buy offers, vouchers, coupons or discounts have been applied.
If you don’t save enough money to cover the cost of your Delivery Pass then Asda will send you an eVoucher to cover the difference – pretty nice, eh?!
Earn cashback with Chase
Chase offers a handy cashback debit card that rewards you with 1% cashback on your every day spending. Simple swap the use of your normal debit or credit card with a Chase debit card and you’ll be automatically rewarded for your purchases. This is a great way to save money at Asda and in your general day-to-day purchases.
You can earn cashback on up to £1,500 of spending per month, which would get you £15 for purchases that you would be making anyway – that’s £15 better in your pocket!
Pay for your shopping with a gift card
If you fancy earning yourself a larger amount of cashback then I suggest you pay for your shopping with a gift card – this has become my favourite money saving hack and I actually pay for most of my shopping with gift cards!
You can use a dedicated app, such as JamDoughnut or everup, to buy a gift card and receive an instant cashback boost. Alternatively you can buy gift cards from the dedicated sections on the Quidco or TopCashback websites.
Now obviously I always have to get the best deal… so I like to check all of the gift card apps to find the best cashback deal before I purchase my gift cards. Rates can vary between different apps and websites and for just a minute of my time I’m able to maximise the savings that I make.
Expect to earn 2%-4% cashback when you purchase a supermarket gift card, though you may find these rates are boosted during promotional periods – I’ve seen some supermarkets be over 6%. Who wouldn’t love a 6% discount on their shopping?!
If you were to earn 2% cashback on every supermarket shop you’d be able to earn a free shop each year. If you were to earn 4% cashback that would double. Imagine earning enough cashback for two free food shops per year!
Asda gift cards can be used to purchase your groceries both in-store, or online, and the process is super simple.
Shop as you usually would in-store and then present your gift card at the till. If you’re using Scan & Go then you can select the gift card option at the checkout before scanning the barcode.
If you’re shopping online you can redeem your gift card at the checkout instead of using your usual payment method.
When you buy a gift card via the everup app you’ll also receive points for their in-app games. You can use these points to play their scratch card and spin-to-win games where you can win cash prizes or have the chance to win a gift card. Again, I’ll have a blog post up on everup soon where we’ll get right into how it works.
Earn cashback when shopping online
If you’re trying to stick to a budget then online shopping can be perfect for this. If you’re someone who tends to make impulse buys in-store (that’s me!), or perhaps don’t have time for in-store grocery shopping, then online shopping is a great choice.
You can earn cashback when you shop online, even for groceries, thanks to sites like TopCashback and Quidco which is an easy way to save money at Asda.
Cashback companies partner with your favourite retailers, like Asda, and they get paid a fee for sending customers their way. These cashback companies then share a slice of their commission with you, as a thank you for visiting their website before you shop.
It’ll add just seconds onto your online shopping routine to visit a cashback website first. Head over to Quidco or TopCashback, search for Asda, click through to the website and then you complete your food shop as you usually would. You can even use a gift card at the checkout.
Use the Blue Light Card discount
If you qualify for a Blue Light Card you can make some savings using it when you shop in Asda stores. Note: you can’t use the Blue Light Card discount to shop online with Asda.
Visit the Asda Rewards app, click More then select Memberships and Link your Blue Light Card. From here you’ll be prompted to enter your Blue Light Card number and your surname.
Once you’ve linked your card you’ll earn 5% back into your Asda Rewards Cashpot when you buy selected items including fresh meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, ready meals, chilled and dairy products, bakery items and fresh flowers. The Just Essentials range is excluded so you won’t earn any cashback on those.
Blue Light Cards are available to selected key workers such as NHS staff, social care workers and members of the emergency services and armed forces.
If you qualify this can be a great way to save money at Asda. Recently, teachers have also become eligible for the Blue Light Card discount.
£1 for soup, roll and unlimited tea and coffee
From 5th November 2024, ASDA has brought back their Winter Warmer deal for over 60s in their cafe. For £1, over 60s can get soup and a roll and unlimited tea and coffee. Make sure you tell your family and friends about this as it’s a fantastic deal to save money at ASDA.
Save money at Asda by signing up for a credit card
If you’re going to shop there regularly, and want to save money at Asda, you could consider signing up to an Asda Money credit card.
You can earn Asda Pounds back on your purchases:
- 1% cashback on your Asda spends including George and petrol stations.
- 0.3% cashback on other spends.
- Welcome bonus offer – varies but seems to be £20 added to your Cashpot when you meet a small set of terms.
Your earned cashback will be added to your Asda Cashpot in the Asda Rewards app. Be sure to convert this cashback to vouchers which you can then redeem against your grocery shopping.
